CyberLink Breaks the Guinness World Record for TV Binge Watching after 94-Hour Marathon

Team CyberLink Achieves Historic Feat with New PowerDVD 16

Taipei, TaiwanApril 13, 2016 CyberLink. (5203.TW),the world’s leading multimedia technology company, today announced that it has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest TV binge watching marathon. To achieve its record breaking goal, Team CyberLink, with help from one sole Brooklynite, endured and recorded a 94-hour non-stop session, setting a new bar for challengers to come.

Taking place at a midtown Manhattan apartment, participant Alejandro “AJ” Fragoso, 25 watched back-to-back episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Twilight Zone, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bob’s Burgers and more. Content was streamed and viewed through CyberLink’s flagship media player PowerDVD, which today is also launching its latest software version. PowerDVD 16 enables users to upscale the video and audio quality of their favorite TV shows, movies and music, with the latest version adding a new TV mode and streaming capabilities with Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast.

“Throughout this process I learned that binge watching TV for abnormally long durations can actually be quite physically taxing,” said Alejandro “AJ” Fragoso. “PowerDVD 16’s media enhancement features, which ensured I could enjoy the shows with ideal picture and sound quality, definitely made the challenge easier than anticipated—I had no idea a show from 2004 could look so good!”

“For PowerDVD, our core goal is always to deliver a product that enhances the viewing experience on your PC or TV—whether you’re watching your favorite TV shows for one hour or 94!” said Richard Carriere, CyberLink’s Senior Vice-President, Global Marketing. “PowerDVD 16 has been put to the ultimate binge watching test, and we’re happy to see that our resilient participant was able to successfully break the record with our involvement.”

Both before and after the binge watching attempt, Dr. Robert Glatter, Founder and Medical Director of DR 911 , emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health, and Assistant Professor at Northwell Hofstra School of Medicine, conducted a physical check-up to examine the effects of prolonged binge watching, using his “pre-binge” check-up as an established baseline for comparing his findings relative to the binger’s status upon breaking the record. The latter findings post-record break have indicated the winning participant’s elevated heart rate after a prolonged period of sleeplessness, as well as neurological side-effects such as an increased frequency of involuntary open-eyed “micronaps” and acute hallucinations. Additionally, his adherence to the Mediterranean diet along with frequent standing and stretching further helped him to fight fatigue and keep his blood sugar stable.

“AJ has gone through what you could consider the ultimate millennial endurance test, pushing his body to the limit to watch an extravagant amount of television with limited sleep and activity,” said Dr. Glatter. “I can only imagine that the visual and audio enhancements of CyberLink’s PowerDVD 16 were what helped keep AJ engaged long enough to push through the 94-hour mark. I certainly could not do it!”

The TV binge watching marathon was last broken on March 19, 2016 in Vienna, Austria. The record was held at 92 hours by four Austrians.
